My two girls are quite comfortable at Gallery9 since I'm always bringing them with me to stop in for various Gallery Director-related reasons. Recently my youngest, Pippa, enjoyed some time with Julie and her dogs.

Initially I think Pippa was a bit tense. Looks as though Dave was, too.

This photo cracks me up. You can just see in Pippa's smile that she's still a bit scared.

They are officially warming up to each other, and all are friends in the end.

We are currently filling our First Friday schedule for 2012 and are asking artists to submit a collection of their work for consideration. There are prime slots available, and we're hoping to show new artists and collections of artists.

Please check out our submissions page on our website for information on this process.

This call-to-artists includes artists we've shown in the past and is an invitation to those who haven't had any representation in galleries. We are interested in new work and want to firm up our schedule for next year.

Here is the nitty-gritty:

Monday evenings, 7-9pm

You can sign up for one class, a 'onesie' for $30
or sign up for a series of four classes, a 'foursie' for $100.
With a 'foursie' you must take the four classes over five consecutive weeks. This way you get one free absence during your paid four-class session.

All supplies are provided by the student.

The format is 'open studio' with all students working on their own projects within a group setting.
Be as structured or as loose as you'd like. I'd be more than happy to develop a curriculum with you for your sessions in class.

Open Enrollment: Start any time you are ready! How much fun is that?

Eli Cedrone has spent her lifetime creating. A graduate of The School of Art & Design/Suffolk Univeristy, she studied art in Italy and at the School of the MFA, Boston. Her professional career began as an art director at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, Bermuda, followed by work as an illustrator and fine artist in Laguna Beach, CA. Her paintings have been exhibited nationwide and she conducts workshops in the US and Bermuda, in the alla prima method.

Ansel Adams: A Garage Sale Find?

Ten years ago, Rick Norsigian made a $200 million find.

The Fresno, Calif., painter — who has a penchant for antique hunting on his days off — was rummaging through boxes at a garage sale when he came across 65 glass negatives that were wrapped in newspapers from 1942 and 1943.

Turns out the negatives, which Norsigian bought for $45 after talking the seller down from $70, are those of the famous nature photographer Ansel Adams. And they’re worth hundreds of millions, according to some appraisers.

"These photographs are really the missing link," said Arnold Peter, a lawyer for Norsigian, at the unveiling of the negatives at a Los Angeles art gallery Tuesday. "They really fill the void in Ansel Adams' early career."

A team of experts put together by Norsigian said the glass plates, which portray scenes from Yosemite National Park and San Francisco, were likely taken between 1919 and the early 1930s. They were previously believed to have been destroyed in a 1937 darkroom fire that consumed 5,000 glass negatives.

"This illuminates a very important part of his evolution as an artist because this is the work that he did in his 20s,” Patrick Alt, a photography expert who says the prints are authentic, told the L.A. Daily News in November 2009. “He had images that didn't fit in anywhere, that show he is trying to discover his voice, to fully realized Ansel Adams masterpieces."

Adams is best known for his striking black-and-white photographs, mainly landscapes, of the American West. He died in 1984 at 82.

VanGogh visits Boston!

The Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation), has graciously lent The Sower, painted in the town of Arles in southern France in November of 1888.

The juxtaposition of these paintings is part of an ongoing series of encounters with great art from museums and private collections across the world—a series called “Visiting Masterpieces.” The Museum’s goal is to bring to Boston carefully chosen works by artists and cultures of all places and periods, in order to enliven our galleries and to allow our audiences the chance to see renowned objects in the context of our collections. The two Sowers—by Millet and by van Gogh—have never before been seen together in Boston. The Museum welcomes this “visitor” to an installation that includes three works by van Gogh from the MFA collection

and individual instruction in a group setting

Painting outdoors or ‘en plein air’ is an exciting activity for
professional and novice painters. Working on location has numerous
advantages and creates some site-specific problems. In this workshop
artists will paint in downtown Norwood and leave the workshop with a
completed painting (or maybe even more than one!)

We’ll start the day early at Gallery9 with a painting demonstration.
During the demo, we’ll discuss locations to consider and offer
specific outdoor techniques. Artists are then welcome to spend the
rest of the day painting---with a lunch break (you provide
lunch)---until we stop for critique in the afternoon. During the
free-paint, instruction will be offered to each individual in an
ongoing, rotating basis.

Artists of all mediums are most welcome to participate. Completed
paintings may be on display at the gallery.
Surprise Supplies include some tools designed to make your ‘plein
air’ painting experience go smoothly and will help you plan your
painting. Also included is a coupon for framing at Custom Art Framing.

Instructor Kim Morin Weineck is Gallery Director at Gallery9 at
Custom Art Framing and is an artist and teacher. She has offered
numerous workshops in everything from ‘finding your artist’s voice’ to
‘abstract expressionism’ during her nearly ten years in art
instruction. Kim holds a degree in Fine Art from MassArt with special
study at the Pont Aven School of Contemporary Art, a RISD affiliated

Space is available AT NO CHARGE for approved vendors on Saturdays from 11am-3:30pm in July and August for an outdoor arts market in downtown Norwood, MA.

Gallery 9 at Custom Art Framing is a free-standing retail building offering premium exposure for customer traffic and ample parking. Three vendor slots are available each Saturday the market is held. One vendor will set up in front of the shop near the sidewalks fronting Central Street and the other two will share our brick patio fronting the side parking lot. The vendor at the front of the store is required to offer a demonstration of their craft to entice customers to come see the market.

We’ll provide you display space, a table, and bathroom facilities.

You are responsible for manning your own booth, providing original artwork for sale, and processing payment for your goods sold.

All art vendors have available for sale must be unframed as we specialize in picture framing and want to avoid any conflict.

Dates are available on a first-come/first-served basis.

What fun we had at the inaugural Critique Group at Gallery9 in Norwood. This past Saturday artists got together at the gallery before opening to give and receive constructive feedback on artwork.

For artists who work alone in their studio space, this critique opportunity can offer a valuable service to get outside perspective. And what a great way to meet new artists! Our next critique is Saturday, April 24th.

Here I am critiquing the work of diane s. scotti. Her starlings painting is part of a series of her recent work, and the exciting comments from critique have me wondering which exciting direction she'll be taking this accomplished piece.

Critique Group at Gallery9 is a comfortable and supportive service welcoming artists of all levels. We meet in the gallery at 8:30am, the last Saturday of the month. Bring up to two paintings for $5. Also bring your coffee and a muffin or whatever else is a delicious, portable breakfast.

Susan G. Komen Art Auction Fundraiser

Hi! I'm Noreen, a design associate at Custom Art Framing. I'm a breast cancer survivor...4 years this May! When I was diagnosed it came as a shock. I took care of my body, ate healthy, exercised and was a working mom. I digested my prognosis, got angry, and channeled that anger into my personal wage against this incidious epidemic. I never wasted my time saying 'why me'. I, instead thought 'why not me'. Cancer doesn't discriminate and it's not very picky. During my treatment I was overwhelmed at the outpouring of support and random acts of kindness. I'm now living my life trying to pay it forward and giving back. I've been an active participant in my town of Mansfield's Relay for Life since 2006 and in 2007 was the key note speaker. This year I've decided to redirect my energy to walk in the Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure in July. I'll walk 60 miles over 3 days to raise money, awareness and voices to ultimately end this global disease for good.

We are holding a silent art auction to support my walk at Gallery 9 March 12, 2010. We are looking for art donations. Please contact the gallery @ 781-762-3300 if you're interested. I had posted about the paintings I did of a giant fork and spoon in the spirit of the holidays and all the eating on everyone's agenda. How exciting it was for me to receive a commission from a shop customer that she wanted me to paint a fork from her set of flatware.

Handmade Pledge

We've all changed our clocks and so it gets darker a bit earlier. While I can find this awfully depressing, this year I'm positively looking at how beautiful the light is during this time of year.Wonderful contrasts of blue sky and yellow leaves are a treat for the eyes.

Walpole Library fundraiser

Local painters have made donations to the Walpole Library art auction.

WALPOLE - Original art work to be auctioned off at the Friends of the Walpole Library Art Auction to be held on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 7-10 p.m. in the Allen Room of the Walpole Country Club. Shown here are five members of the Foxboro Art Association: Nancy Bacevich, Haydi Hurley, Tony Donovan, and Ann Gorbett all Walpole residents, and Kimberly Weineck formerly of Walpole currently living in North Attleboro. Raffle items and a silent auction of donations from local businesses and area attractions further help to raise funds for the new library. Music provided by the Wildewood Jazz Band. Custom Art Framing and Gallery 9 is hosting a gallery opening for Don Weller on Friday night October 30th from 6 - 8pm.

I have a copy of this magazine from 1975 framed in my kitchen. Blast from the '70s!

Don is a celebrated illustrator, art director, graphic designer and cowboy. He spent years as an art teacher for Colleges and Universities in California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Washington State. Over the years, he has done covers for TV Guide, Time Magazine, posters for the Hollywood Bowl, the 1984 LA Olympics, and the NFL to name a few.

Currently he raises Cutting Horses in his ranch high up in the mountains in Oakley, Utah, while continuing to produce amazing artwork. His style has changed over the years, but there is always something familiar in his artwork that tells you it is his.

Don recently published his newest book of western inspired watercolors titled Watercolor Cowboys .

I am very close to this artist, he is my father.

Since late August, Noreen has joined us at Custom Art Framing and Gallery9, and we're delighted to have her with us.She's a whiz with all things framing---assembly, design, etc. and such fun to talk to.

Noreen has taken some of the pressure off Julie to get everything done, including organize our walls and walls of frame moulding samples.

She joins Julie, me, Nancy and Nell (who joined us at the beginning of the summer.) We laughed that you need a name that begins with "N" to work at the shop.

And so now Julie and I will be known as Nulie and Nim. (I know, not so funny.)

Keeping some of the aspects of my life without children has been critical for me and my sanity. On Fridays I've been trying to work at the gallery per usual. I haven't been there as much as I'd like, but the time I do spend there inspires me to get back into my studio.

Julie, the gallery owner, has let me bring Elizabeth with me to work and I'm so pleased that she's an easy infant so this has worked out.
Here is a photo of a gallery visitor, my student, Frank, holding Elizabeth. What a treat it is as a new mom to be have my little girl with me at the gallery. I don't think some of the customers mind, either.

“My plan was to be a cowboy, but by the time I was born the open range was all chopped up by barbed wire”, says Don Weller. Don drew horses as a kid and rodeoed up through college. His career in Los Angeles included doing graphic design and illustration, which included posters for The Hollywood Bowl, covers for Time and TV Guide, and stamps for the U.S. Post Office. He has taught at numerous Colleges and Universities in California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Washington state.

Don's shows and awards:
Idea, Graphis, Photographis, Typomundus 20/2, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts, The Art Directors Club of New York (including gold medals), The Los Angeles Art Directors Show (including gold & silver medals), the Hugo Hammer Memorial Award, Creativity (New York), Society of Typographic Arts (Chicago), Biennale Uzite Grafiky (Brno Czechoslovakia), The New York Andy Awards, The Society of Publication Designers, Print Casebooks, and others. We have been exhibiting and selling Kerry Hawkins' photographs for a few years now. She has an amazing eye for composition. Her photos are consistently comforting with their angles, depth and thought. There is always so much to see in them. I'm always amazed at the mood and color she captures in what seems to be mere moments. I guess the best compliment is the feeling that I could never take a photo like that.

There are many different ways of hanging and displaying art room by room, and it is advisable to sit or stand where you will most often be when deciding on which wall to hang a particular piece or at what height. In the case of a dining room, for example, remember that you will be usually seated and that the light will most likely be dim (consider picture lights). In the bathroom, note what you can see while soaking in a tub or brushing your teeth. By giving some good thought to positioning your pictures, you will be more likely to achieve an effective display and to gain greater enjoyment from living with your art.

I have decided to bring in some new art for the new Gallery and shop location. I am going with a fruit and vegetable them. I took the tomato shot on friday at the Copley Farmers Market. I wanted to go for cheerful and light. I have mounted the photos onto 6x6 and 8x8 boxes. Kind of a different thing for me.

When I arrived the finishing touches were being applied to the new building. The art space is wonderful and some artwork was already up.

I love all the frames choices and colors. Some frames are serious and some not so serious with lots of sparkle. I really love the open feel of the new gallery and shop.

New shop signage

The new shop is coming along and we're excited about the signage.Julie had GIANT frames made for the front of the building. These big frames will showcase reproductions of artwork and inform our customers of events and other things going on at the shop.How flattered I was when Julie asked me for permission to use one of my paintings in a frame! She also selected Edwina Caci, another instructor at the shop, to use one of her images.
Mine is the salt marsh, of course. (I knew you could have guessed that!)

Hello curious readers!

I know it's been a long time since I updated our "Frame of Mind" blog with information about Custom Art Framing and Gallery 9 but it's been a frantic time at the shop.

Right when one suspects that never-ending 'to do' list is winding down, new things crop up and changes happen putting things into important perspective.

It was just over a week ago that Dolly, Julie and Nancy's mother (and frequent helper-extraordinaire) suffered a massive stroke. After a week with things in a precarious state, it seems that she is out of the woods but not at all in the clear.

Please keep Dolly, Julie, Nancy (as well as Kathy and Anna, Dolly's other daughters) in your thoughts and prayers.

And of course look for more information about everything going on in the near future. I promise to post more regular updates.

The new location has been painted and built out. Signage is nearly complete. Once the floors are done you'll start to see our present location thin out more and more.

To celebrate Earth Day and being green, Gallery 9, put on this lovely show. There was a wide variety of work. My entry is the flower in the middle of the top photo. My piece was among some really nice works of art. A generous portion of all show sales will go to Massachusetts Audubon Visual Arts Center in Canton. This is the last show before the Gallery and Frame shop move to a new location in Norwood.

Our days at the present location now are numbered but we continue to appreciate your business. We are working hard to ensure that there are no lapses in customer service for your picture framing needs. We are here to help, above everything else.

The move (just around the corner) is exciting! What an opportunity to start up again but with better knowledge to serve you, our customer. We've been listening for six years now and are excitedly making changes to make your experience with us better.

To answer two of your most prevalent questions:

Where is the new location?
Our new address is 45 Central Street, Norwood, MA 02062.

Our new location a block away and is the white and brick building with the parking lot(!) and two nice bay windows in the front. Official signage is designed and being installed soon.

When are you moving?
This is what we're working so hard to pin down so as not to inconvenience our customers. So far it looks to be mid-May---perhaps the 18th. More information on this will follow as it becomes set in stone.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you soon for events in the present location (Being Green show opening reception is Friday, April 24th) and at our new location (we'll be sure to have a grand re-opening shindig which should be a lot of fun.)

Just to let you all know, I'm facilitating a new critique group for local artists at Gallery 9, promptly at 9:30am the last Saturday of every month. This month meets April 25th at the present location---679 Washington Street, downtown Norwood.

The cost is $5 for up to 2 pieces. You're encouraged to bring coffee and a muffin or whatever and meet new artists and contribute to the discussion of their work and get new feedback on your own.

Being Green!

Just a quick reminder about our Being Green open call art show.

Here are the specifics:

Gallery 9 is seeking art submissions for it's second annual open-call art show this April.

Gallery 9 Director, Kim Morin Weineck, and shop owner, Julie Vecchio, are asking local artists to interpret "being green" in a creative way. Pieces will be juried by a three person panel. Gallery 9 will donate 20% of all sales to Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center in Canton.

Guidelines:
Original work in all mediums is accepted including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, pen and ink, photography as well as artisan crafts, jewelry, sculpture, etc.
All work must be for sale.
Pieces cannot exceed 32" X 40".

Timeline:
Deadline for submission: Friday, April 3rd
Jury selection of submitted work: Friday, April 5th
Pick up of non-accepted work: Friday, April 10th
Show reception: Friday, April 24th

Four people work at Custom Art Framing (CAF) and Gallery9: Julie (fearless leader), Nancy (Julie's multi-talented silversmithing jeweler/framer-extraordinaire sister), Rachel (part-time frame-assembler/order-taker wunderkind), and me the gallery director.

We were surprised to learn last year that apart from Julie, we all share close birthdays.

Today, March 6th is Rachel's birthday.
Tomorrow, March 7th is Nancy's birthday.
Sunday, March 8th is my birthday.

Isn't that kind of neat? Makes remembering birthdays at work pretty easy.

Selfishly, I'm using the gallery blog today for my own purposes. (Sinister laughing here, please.)

I'm delighted to be the gallery director at Gallery9 and work with Julie closely on all things gallery-related and have enjoyed this role for more than a year now. In August, the role will change a little bit because I'll be working my regular Friday but bringing in my little baby---due August 4th.

Later today I'll be finding out the gender and it's very exciting! We already have a 20-month-old little girl, Lucy, and are anxious to learn if she will have a baby brother or sister.

Finding new artwork for the gallery

It's been a whole week since I last posted to the blog. Yikes does time fly. Of course I want it to fly right into Springtime!

Not much to report. Julie and I are diligently working toward some plans for upcoming shows and exciting workshops. We also met with two new prospective artists. One of them, a photographer, will be bringing in two larger format prints for the gallery!

I'll get photos of the gallery today and post them as soon as I can.

We've been busy at Gallery 9 and Custom Art Framing which we thank you for. Your support of the business means so much, especially during these times. We're here for you and want to meet your needs.

You'll notice some changes to the blog. We're getting ready for February and the season of "LOVE ART," our latest 1" button. It's also kind of nice to keep things evolving and updating.

Thank you to our gallery artist and friend, Ann Gorbett, for her design skills on this new banner. She also had done the last one in which Dave our gallery mascot made an appearance.As always, everyone is welcome to email us a banner for the blog which we'll be trying to change up monthly.

Looking for inspiration to get you through the winter blahs? Gallery 9 carries the artwork of Michelle Clay. She paints wonderful snippets of winter.

More available in the gallery in assorted sizes and colors.

In December, Custom Art Framing & Gallery 9 instituted a new, fun marketing campaign. With the help of Buttonkitty, a friend from MassArt, we've been designing buttons!

If you were here in December, you may have picked up either of our first releases:
BUY ART and GIVE ART. We thought they were the perfect message for the gift-giving season.
Response to these pins was excellent and, in the spirit of the next holiday upon us, we've just received our newest button: LOVE ART.
