VanGogh visits Boston!

The Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation), has graciously lent The Sower, painted in the town of Arles in southern France in November of 1888.

The juxtaposition of these paintings is part of an ongoing series of encounters with great art from museums and private collections across the world—a series called “Visiting Masterpieces.” The Museum’s goal is to bring to Boston carefully chosen works by artists and cultures of all places and periods, in order to enliven our galleries and to allow our audiences the chance to see renowned objects in the context of our collections. The two Sowers—by Millet and by van Gogh—have never before been seen together in Boston. The Museum welcomes this “visitor” to an installation that includes three works by van Gogh from the MFA collection

This little mantra I found online. It's the 'handmade pledge.' And it's the perfect introduction to my topic of the Shop Till You Drop event, a week from today. Julie and I (and Noreen who is making soap!) have been busy working to find and create the best merchandise for the show.

It's very exciting.

“My plan was to be a cowboy, but by the time I was born the open range was all chopped up by barbed wire”, says Don Weller. Don drew horses as a kid and rodeoed up through college. His career in Los Angeles included doing graphic design and illustration, which included posters for The Hollywood Bowl, covers for Time and TV Guide, and stamps for the U.S. Post Office. He has taught at numerous Colleges and Universities in California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Washington state.

Don's shows and awards:
Idea, Graphis, Photographis, Typomundus 20/2, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts, The Art Directors Club of New York (including gold medals), The Los Angeles Art Directors Show (including gold & silver medals), the Hugo Hammer Memorial Award, Creativity (New York), Society of Typographic Arts (Chicago), Biennale Uzite Grafiky (Brno Czechoslovakia), The New York Andy Awards, The Society of Publication Designers, Print Casebooks, and others. To celebrate Earth Day and being green, Gallery 9, put on this lovely show. There was a wide variety of work. My entry is the flower in the middle of the top photo. My piece was among some really nice works of art. A generous portion of all show sales will go to Massachusetts Audubon Visual Arts Center in Canton. This is the last show before the Gallery and Frame shop move to a new location in Norwood.

Being Green!

Just a quick reminder about our Being Green open call art show.

Here are the specifics:

Gallery 9 is seeking art submissions for it's second annual open-call art show this April.

Gallery 9 Director, Kim Morin Weineck, and shop owner, Julie Vecchio, are asking local artists to interpret "being green" in a creative way. Pieces will be juried by a three person panel. Gallery 9 will donate 20% of all sales to Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center in Canton.

Guidelines:
Original work in all mediums is accepted including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, pen and ink, photography as well as artisan crafts, jewelry, sculpture, etc.
All work must be for sale.
Pieces cannot exceed 32" X 40".

Timeline:
Deadline for submission: Friday, April 3rd
Jury selection of submitted work: Friday, April 5th
Pick up of non-accepted work: Friday, April 10th
Show reception: Friday, April 24th

Life is a bowl...Opening night photos!

What a great event!
Everyone had an awesome time and the place was packed. We had a few sales and a whole lot of schmoozing, it was a success!
It started off with people drizzling in by two's and three's and then all of a sudden we were a packed house!

We are so proud of all the contributing artists. Most came with family and friends, and many stayed until the bitter end.
I am foreseeing many more of these 'open calls' in the future, it sure is fun to see what people come up with when you let them take an idea and roll with it!

So---talk about exciting!!

Krystal Grow, a reporter with the Norwood Record, just left after she interviewed me and Julie about our "Life is a Bowl" event. She had seen our calendar posting and came in to learn more.

The good news is that you should check out their free paper next Thursday, July 31st for an article about it.

She said the Record will be sure to cover the reception, too!

Call for Entries :: Life is a bowl :: gallery show/charity event

"Life is a bowl" is our next group show at Gallery 9 and we are bubbling over with excitement about it.

Having worked on the specifics for the past few months, we're happy to announce one big change--rather than show work only by our in-house gallery artists (what a great bunch of people they are), we're inviting EVERYONE to submit. What fun!

Julie and I are looking forward to seeing how people will interpret this phrase in all sizes, shapes, and mediums. Some artists have given us a glimpse at their creations and already it has us envisioning a dynamic show of vibrant color and composition.

Submission guidelines:
All mediums are accepted provided work can be displayed, priced, and sold.
Proper framing/display is critical as we must maintain the high standard of our gallery (and good framing often leads to quick sales).
Size cannot exceed 40"x60".
Any interpretation of the phrase "Life is a bowl" is welcome be it literal or abstract.
All work submitted must be available for sale. Work will be priced by the artist and gallery.
Sales commission will apply to sold artwork with the gallery donating half of the proceeds to the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Norwood.

Here's another reason you should submit:
For the month of September, people will be voting for their "fan favorite" from the show. The artist whose piece has the most votes will win a $200 gift certificate from Custom Art Framing to use either for framing or for a gallery purchase.

Important dates:
Deadline for drop off: August 22nd
Hanging: week of August 29th
Voting for "fan favorite": September 1st-25th
Opening reception: September 12th and 13th

Looking to add to your art collection? This show is a great time to do it!

Gallery9 will be displaying a wide variety of styles, colors, and mediums for the month of September. Take advantage of the show to add the perfect piece to your home. Purchases may be made at any time during the sale and picked up after September 25th when the show comes down.

The fine print:
The gallery reserves the right to refuse any artwork for any reason.
Reasons may include size, subject, content, space limitations, and, you know...how do you say?...just not being appropriate for the show.

The gallery is a business so we have to use our business brain.

Success!

This past Friday and Saturday we held the opening reception for our first art show this season as well as the first show since launching Gallery 9. We called it "Start!" as it was a beginning for a lot of things.

Now that we've had the reception and listened to all the feedback, it's clear we could have called the show "success!"

We want to thank our artists and our collectors and customers for their continued support. All of you make the gallery possible.

Mother's Day

I am the gallery director here at Gallery 9, but I'm also a mother.

In honor of Mother's Day I'm being a bit selfish and posting a photo of my little girl, Lucy, hanging out at the shop while my Mother-in-law designs some framing with Julie.

Start!

Gallery 9 is holding the first art show this season featuring our in-house artists.

Start! will have an opening reception Friday, May 9th from 5-8pm and Saturday, May 10th from 1-4pm.

We have a lot of things scheduled ongoing throughout the day. Highlights include painting and jewelry-making demonstrations, book signings, artist talks, and introductions. We'll also be unveiling a project to our in-house artists for an upcoming show this fall.

Busy busy busy

We've been busy with a slew of projects at the shop: selecting new artists, planning the yearly calendar, scheduling workshops, and getting a fair amount of spring cleaning done.

The change of season always brings about a sense of new beginnings. Nothing could be more understated in terms of what we've been up to at Gallery 9 and Custom Art Framing! Everything is getting spruced up and reorganized to make it the best it can be for our customers.

While I will be posting photos shortly, I do have to announce that we've scheduled a show of our in-house artists:

The show will be Friday, May 9th and Saturday, May 10th
Events will showcase our the work of our artists and the artists themselves.
Already on board are gallery talks, artists creating new works at the gallery, and a jewelry-making demonstration.

(The jewelry demo proves to be exciting because Nancy MacCallum asked if she could bring in her torch (!) and we said yes! )

Foxboro Art Association Members' Show

A lot of the members from Foxboro Art Association come to us to frame their pieces and we love that they do. This month they are having their annual members' show and we went to check it out and see how it looked.
What can we say but that it was fabulous. What a strong show of work! And what a lot of entries! It's impressive to have such an active artist community in the area. We were delighted to have gone to check it out.
We have to add that we think the ribbons make some of our frames look even better, won't you agree?Congratulations to all who entered. It was a wonderful show.
