A sneak peek at our next First Friday Event.

October 30th we'll be featuring artist Don Weller.

“My plan was to be a cowboy, but by the time I was born the open range was all chopped up by barbed wire”, says Don Weller. Don drew horses as a kid and rodeoed up through college. His career in Los Angeles included doing graphic design and illustration, which included posters for The Hollywood Bowl, covers for Time and TV Guide, and stamps for the U.S. Post Office. He has taught at numerous Colleges and Universities in California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Washington state.

Don's shows and awards:
Idea, Graphis, Photographis, Typomundus 20/2, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts, The Art Directors Club of New York (including gold medals), The Los Angeles Art Directors Show (including gold & silver medals), the Hugo Hammer Memorial Award, Creativity (New York), Society of Typographic Arts (Chicago), Biennale Uzite Grafiky (Brno Czechoslovakia), The New York Andy Awards, The Society of Publication Designers, Print Casebooks, and others. He is included in 200 Years of American Illustration published by the New York Historical Museum, as well as several volumes of trademarks and numerous illustration books. Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators, Outstanding Alumni Award, Washington State University.

Life is a bowl...Opening night photos!

What a great event!
Everyone had an awesome time and the place was packed. We had a few sales and a whole lot of schmoozing, it was a success!
It started off with people drizzling in by two's and three's and then all of a sudden we were a packed house!

We are so proud of all the contributing artists. Most came with family and friends, and many stayed until the bitter end.
I am foreseeing many more of these 'open calls' in the future, it sure is fun to see what people come up with when you let them take an idea and roll with it!

Fridays are good and busy

I'm peppering this post with photos from the show, "Life is a bowl of..." to whet your appetite.

Julie and I were hard at work yesterday (with the help of Nancy MacCallum and Jennifer O'Neil for a spell, thankfully) revamping the gallery getting all in order for the show, "Life is a bowl of..." and it was fun, a lot of hard work, but ultimately quite fulfilling. I am delighted--and a bit proud--of how the gallery looks.

For our first "open call" show, where we invited everyone to participate, we had nearly 40 entries. People would have submitted multiples if we'd have let them, too. The selection of subjects under the subject is vast and many mediums are represented, including one piece of collage that included reclaimed ivory!

"The Life is a Bowl" show is set up in the front of the gallery. Further back we have displayed our Gallery 9 in-house artists. It's a nice full display of 2D work including Jude McGinn, Jennifer O'Neil, Kathy Weller, Ann Gorbett, Irena Roman, and me, Kim Morin Weineck. For 3D works we have Nancy MacCallum's jewelry, Lisa W.B. Walker's pottery, Andrew Osborne's wood turnings, and Hala Alwach's wire choker necklaces.

Kerry Hawkins, a photographer who is our First Friday artist for next Friday, September 5th from 5-7pm. We had a lovely, successful turnout for Jennifer O'Neil's inaugural First Friday so it'll be fun to have them continue.

Everyone! Let's get those submissions in!

Life is a bowl of ... gallery show. We'll be posting some of the submissions soon and you'll be mighty impressed.

Remember, some of the proceeds of art sales go to the Norwood Food Pantry. It's going to be a great show.

In Thursday's paper

The reporter, Krystal Grow, of The Norwood Record informed us that the story about our gallery show, Life is a Bowl, will run next week.

Be sure to look at the paper on Thursday, August 7th for the scoop (and a photo of us in the gallery!)

We're meeting lots of artists who are bringing in submissions and telling us their thoughts about what they'll be submitting. It'll be quite a great event, surely!
