Under the table

I've mentioned before in blog posts that I'm delighted that Julie lets me bring my little three-month-old, Elizabeth, to the gallery. We were both in attendance at Don Weller's Friday show last night.

Elizabeth had a place of honor out of the way of everyone.

What fun we had at the reception for Don Weller, Julie's dad (seen here with our wonderful customer, Gary Greenburg.)A wonderful turnout. Great artwork. Excellent conversations.A lovely time. (Judy Donovan and Bill Hurley smile for the camera. Polo Barrera does, too, but sadly I chopped his face in half! Oh no!)Thank you to all who attended, purchased, and enjoyed. Nancy's First Friday post

This post was written by Custom Art Framing's own Nancy MacCallum and appeared on the Boston Handmade blog today.

Custom Art Framing and Gallery 9 is hosting a gallery opening for Don Weller on Friday night October 30th from 6 - 8pm.

I have a copy of this magazine from 1975 framed in my kitchen. Blast from the '70s!

Don is a celebrated illustrator, art director, graphic designer and cowboy. He spent years as an art teacher for Colleges and Universities in California, Arizona, Utah, Texas, and Washington State. Over the years, he has done covers for TV Guide, Time Magazine, posters for the Hollywood Bowl, the 1984 LA Olympics, and the NFL to name a few.

Currently he raises Cutting Horses in his ranch high up in the mountains in Oakley, Utah, while continuing to produce amazing artwork. His style has changed over the years, but there is always something familiar in his artwork that tells you it is his.

Don recently published his newest book of western inspired watercolors titled Watercolor Cowboys .

I am very close to this artist, he is my father.

If you are around the Norwood area on Friday, October 30th, please stop by and have a glass of wine with us.

Final First Friday 2008

Last Friday Ann Gorbett was the artist showcased at First Friday. What a great night it was!First Fridays need some preparation. Ann kindly stopped in earlier to help us out. While she was there, flowers were delivered. Her sisters had sent a bouquet. How nice!

Toward the end of the night Julie and I realized no one had taken photos during the show. Here Julie works to rectify that situation.
And here's the gallery. Ann's work looked fabulous! This photo shows some her work in better detail. The golf pieces are wonderful. It's been a great year of First Friday shows. Thank you, Ann, for being a great artist to showcase at the end to a wonderful year!

Artwork for the season

Ann Gorbett, our Gallery 9 artist who works in palette knife, sold a piece at the SMALL WORKS Show which many people loved.

I figured I'd post it here for you to see.

If you click on this picture you can see it larger and notice how the kids in the background are actually blobs of color which, from Ann's deft palette knife wielding, instead look like kids in the background!

This piece sold to an excited art collector who was delighted with her purchase.

You can do well this season coming to Gallery 9 to buy perfect pieces for the people on your list. We offer a great selection priced from $25 to $165. Fabulous! Buy Art! Give Art!

Ann Gorbett will be our in-house artist featured in our final First Friday of the year. Come by December 5th from 5-7pm to meet Ann, see more of her work, and enjoy some light refreshments. It'll be the perfect respite during this quickly getting more and more hectic time of year.

On exhibit now and in the near future

Our SMALL WORKS receptions last Friday and Saturday were wonderfully successful.

As I said before, I was proud to look around the gallery at the fine selection of work. What wonderful support we've had from our gallery-artists and gallery-friends.

The work will be hanging through the end of the year, so stop in and select the perfect gift this holiday.

Not ones to rest on our laurels, the next gallery event is Friday and will feature Cindy Kerr doing some LIVE PAINTING in the gallery. Our next reception is December's FIRST FRIDAY on December 5th featuring Ann Gorbett. All events in the gallery are a lot of fun.

Please stop by when you can. It'll be well worth your trip!

Appreciation

To follow up, Gallery 9 and Custom Art Framing has sent a donation to the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Norwood representing the shop proceeds from sales of paintings from the "Life is a Bowl..." show.

Please check the Letters to the Editor in the Norwood Record, next week, too. We wrote to thank everyone--artists and customers alike---for their participation which helped make the show a success.

We appreciate all of your support of the shop and gallery.

On a different subject, readers to this blog know I have a daughter, Lucy.

Here is my Mom with Lucy at my First Friday reception last week.

It was a lot of work for my mom (who watches my daughter and my nephew all day on Fridays--a tiring day for her to say the least) to have gotten the kids dressed up for an appearance at the gallery.

It was lovely to have my family at the gallery for my reception. Thanks, Mom. I appreciate all you do for me.

An owner's work is never done

Having owned a small retail shop a few years back now I know first-hand that Julie's "to do" list never ends.

Here she is on a high ladder changing a light bulb prior to our First Friday opening last week.

She couldn't shy away from my camera while she was on the ladder.

I appreciated her efforts especially because they illuminated my graphic paintings beautifully.

Thanks, Julie!

An addition to our blog

Kerry Hawkins, one of our Gallery 9 artists, is a blogger herself. She is a diligent blogger and posts daily. I always enjoy peeking in on her blog and seeing what photos she has posted.

She was kind enough to come to our First Friday reception last week and took some photos. Normally camera shy, I think Kerry did a great job of making me look like, well, like me.

Kerry is also responsible for the banner on our blog right now, Frame of Mind, and is a member of Boston Handmade with our own Nancy MacCallum, Julie's sister and silversmith extraordinaire.

A fabulous connector and business-savvy woman, Kerry has asked to be a contributor to this blog and we are delighted to have her on board. Look for her to be posting soon.

And thank-you, Kerry, for your offer and interest. We appreciate your efforts for the gallery.

Art reception tonight & thoughts on autumn

Wow! It's 11:27am already and the shop is just bristling with energy.

I think the change of seasons that you can smell in the air has people thinking of their homes. It's the time of year I know I start to hunker down, start making meals in the slow cooker, and get cozy and comfy.

It's the perfect time to stop in to the gallery and see our original art! Tonight, in fact, we're having an art opening. Come in for some wine, cheese, and home-made plum tart from my kitchen.

Make your home a beautiful, cozy place as we enjoy this brief season of bright, fantastic color before the ... well, you know, the doldrums of wintertime grays.

First Friday report on Saturday

As reported, we showcased the work of Kerry Hawkins for our First Friday show last night. What fun it was!

The show looked beautiful, as did Kerry, and happily the rain held off for our second of these gallery events. Here she is in the gallery, standing in front of her work. (Photo courtesy of Nancy MacCallum on Kerry's camera.)

Gallery 9 is happy to call Kerry an in-house artist. We hope you come by and see her pieces for yourself.

First Fridays :: Kerry Hawkins

Tonight we are featuring the photography of Kerry Hawkins from 5-7pm in the gallery.
We've showcased her work in the gallery, and it's looking FABULOUS!

Not familiar with Kerry?

She's one of our Gallery 9 in-house artists. Her eye is unique and her focus always singular. The gallery display of her work looks fabulous.

She'll be here with her camera to meet-and-greet and answer any questions you may have.

For more info on Kerry, check out her website at www.khawkinsphotography.com
and her etsy shop here.

Fridays are good and busy

I'm peppering this post with photos from the show, "Life is a bowl of..." to whet your appetite.
Pitfall, original oil by Zafarana
Julie and I were hard at work yesterday (with the help of Nancy MacCallum and Jennifer O'Neil for a spell, thankfully) revamping the gallery getting all in order for the show, "Life is a bowl of..." and it was fun, a lot of hard work, but ultimately quite fulfilling. I am delighted--and a bit proud--of how the gallery looks.
Life is a bowl of possibilites, original oil by Michelle Clay
For our first "open call" show, where we invited everyone to participate, we had nearly 40 entries. People would have submitted multiples if we'd have let them, too. The selection of subjects under the subject is vast and many mediums are represented, including one piece of collage that included reclaimed ivory!

Life is a bowl of Mashed Potatoes, original oil by Ann Gorbett
"The Life is a Bowl" show is set up in the front of the gallery. Further back we have displayed our Gallery 9 in-house artists. It's a nice full display of 2D work including Jude McGinn, Jennifer O'Neil, Kathy Weller, Ann Gorbett, Irena Roman, and me, Kim Morin Weineck. For 3D works we have Nancy MacCallum's jewelry, Lisa W.B. Walker's pottery, Andrew Osborne's wood turnings, and Hala Alwach's wire choker necklaces.

Life is a bowl to go, original gold-filled and silver ring by Nancy MacCallum
Kerry Hawkins, a photographer who is our First Friday artist for next Friday, September 5th from 5-7pm. We had a lovely, successful turnout for Jennifer O'Neil's inaugural First Friday so it'll be fun to have them continue.

Wait until you come by. It's quite impressive!

Photos from First Friday with Jennifer O'Neil

First Friday with Jennifer O'Neil was a success. It was our first First Friday and none of us were sure what to expect but it was just wonderful to get this event of and running so well!

Jenn's work looked wonderful. Numerous positive comments and sales (!!YAY, Jenn!!!)

Here she is with my Lucy. How silly I am. It's somehow about my daughter who made a sneak appearance at Jenn's show.

Here Julie and Krystal Grow from the Norwood Record schmooze a bit. (Don't you love Krystal's dress?)
More of Lucy around the gallery. Jenn's work makes a sneak appearance in the back of this shot of Jenn straightening out Lucy's dress. (Am I stretching it a bit?)

First Friday openings have refreshments!

I won't be this silly again, I promise. And at work today I'll get good pictures of Jenn's work. Like I said, it's impressive to see it framed and hanging. Quite an accomplishment. Congratulations, Jenn!
